Updating a Vacation / 2nd Home
This 2 bedroom condo unit located just off the beach on the island of Kauai, Hawaii was completely remodeled and redecorated. The goal was to create an upscale, sophisticated interior reflecting the serenity and beauty of Kauai. The unit is rented when the owners are not on the island so, durability was a "must have." Marya Taylor Interiors is available for 'remote consultation' or select travel to satisfy the decorating needs of your second/vacation home.
The old carpeting and tile were removed and 18" porcelain tile added throughout. The maple cabinetry in the kitchen and baths was updated by adding simple nickel hardware. The old wall paper was removed in the kitchen and replaced with a faux paper made to mimic alligator hide. All new custom window treatments were designed in woven woods and draperies in canvas were fabricated with woven wood in the pattern. 6" crown molding detail was added throughout, as well as new light fixtures and ceiling medallions.
The large sectional in the living room converts to sleep 2, making this condo available to sleep six. The trick in making a small space look large is to incorporate large pieces of furniture that are custom designed to fit the space. The furnishings were kept neutral and durable in faux suede and leathers. The real inspiration for the color way was gathered from the large contemporary artwork. Splashes of color were coordinated in the form of an art glass floral arrangement on the dining room table, other coordinating framed art and throw pillows on the sofa/sectional.
The bedroom furniture was not replaced. Instead, we jazzed it up with all new custom bedroom ensembles and woven wood roman shades. The shades were hung 12" higher than the window frames to make the windows look taller and in better proportion with the wall and 9’ ft ceilings. The inspiration for the wall color was extracted from the fabric color. The bathrooms both feature new wall coverings in a sophisticated tropical patterns that coordinates with the bedrooms.
The plastic lanai furniture was replaced with more beautiful and durable powder coated aluminum components in a neutral color to withstand the salty ocean breezes.
